about

Devon had been trying to research Inuit accordion music for years, but could only find snippets on a few CDs. Accordions are hugely popular among the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. We learned a few tunes from a recording of Kuujjuaq’s Lucy Johannes and played them for Pita Aatami of the Makivik Corporation when he visited Seattle. He was so moved that he invited us to come play in Kuujjuaq for their annual Aqpik Jam Festival. In August 2011, we traveled to the Arctic and got to meet Lucy and learn more about Inuit culture. What an honor! Playing these tunes brings back happy memories of the place, the people, and their music. The second of Lucy’s tunes here turned out to be a Scottish march, The Barren Rocks of Aden, which shows an interesting connection!
